A SCENIC ROAD TRIP IN EUROPE’S BEST DESERT
BARDENAS REALES NATIONAL PARK
Bardenas Reales National Park is a true wild beauty desert in south-east of Navarre, nearby Tudela in Spain. It’s also awarded as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The park occupies around 42.000 hectares with its semi-desert landscapes and impressive views.
HOW TO REACH ?
We decided to visit this beautiful desert last year in May during our road-trip to the Basque Country. You can drive there with a car, motorcycle or even a bike. There are several bike routes and three hiking tracks. You can also take a guided desert tour with 4×4. Otherwise if you are coming from abroad, Pamplona’s Airport is the closest one. You can also check Bilbao or San Sebastian Airport. For the train, Tudela could be the best stop.
Our first impression: “It looks like a Grand Canyon but a smaller version! 😊 ”. Once we were in front of “Castildetierra” which is the symbol of the Bardenas Reales, we were impressed more than ever. You can totally understand why it’s the most photographed one.
WHAT TO EAT & DRINK ?
It’s the perfect place to have a picnic! So we enjoyed it in the heart of the Bardenas Reales. By the way, we didn’t see any food truck or restaurant/bar where you can buy a snack so we would recommend you to prepare your picnic as well and take minimum 3L of water! PS : If you choose to go there with a car, don’t forget to fill your tank because it’s not easy to find any gas station around.
HOW MANY TIME TO VISIT AND THE SURROUNDING AREA ?
We visited the Bardenas Reales in a day. Then you can go to see the surrounding area : Pamplona, Tudela or Navarre Wine Route. You can also stay at Hotel Aire de Bardenas in a huge air bubble with a lunar landscape. We’ve already made our reservation before to discover this hotel so we couldn’t stayed there. But we went to Pamplona. First we visited the city then we enjoyed some tapas with a wine.
GENERAL TIPS FOR THE BARDENAS REALES :
Once you arrive to the Bardenas Reales, on the right you will see a military base; the military is training there but nothing to be scared. We even asked a question to them.
Some areas are completely forbidden to visit. Be careful about those areas, the military keep an eye on it.
Like we already told you, we were there in May so we totally avoid the crowd. If you want to do the same, then go there in May or June.
We really liked this western and authentic ambiance in the desert. It’s so impressive to see this kind of desert in Europe. Even the sensation of riding on dusty roads with our car was special. And the desert landscapes leave you speechless and make you feel like a cowboy. 😊
You can go check the tourist office before to arrive in Bardenas Reales – it’s on the way to the Park. Also after your visit, you can admire the Bardenas Reales from the viewpoint: Mirador de Aguilares.
Even if it has inspired too many writers, painters and also some film directors, the Natural Park of Bardenas Reales is a true hidden gem of Europe. Even some of our Spanish friends didn’t know about it so if you have any opportunity, go definitely check this unique landscape in the region of Navarre in Spain.
