A large island and province right in the middle of Indonesia. Its culture, people, religion, beaches and hidden treasures, such as finding a bunch of rice fields along the road, temples, nature, waterfalls or hikes, and of course, the delicious food and their unique personality will immediately make you fall in love. The perfect place and environment to travel as a backpacker, so take your bag and get ready to dive in this post and come with me through this beautiful island.
Bali has a lot to offer, from a relaxing vacation to release the stress of the big city to an adventurous trip full of exciting activities and beautiful spots. I went there as a backpacker. I am from Spain but I was working in Australia and so, we decided to pack our stuff and fly to the magic island.
Tickets from Sydney to Bali are extremely affordable and the connection is great, in a direct flight we arrived to Bali on a 3th of December. We had three weeks ahead around and we first decided to head south towards Uluwatu. I can’t describe in words how amazing this place is, the clear colour of the sea, a lot of people surfing, laying on the beach or dancing at Single Finn at sunset make it unique.
I will never forget the delicious J-Bay Bowl (peanut butter, banana, honey and soy milk) from Nalu Bowls that we had right in front of the water.
Things to do in Bali
We fell in love with the south part of the island but It was time to move up towards Jimbaran, Ubud and Seminiak. We visited a lot of temples, such as, Tanah Lot, Tirta Empul and Pura Taman Ayun. We had the chance of learning about Hinduism religion and
how Balinese people practice and make offerings to God every single day of their lives. It’s incredible to see the warm hospitality from Balinese people and all the things that they offered us. It is the right place for a tight budget trip, you can sleep at homestays or hostels for a very affordable price and the quality is still great.
The best part of traveling this way is that you will meet a lot of people doing exactly the same things that you are doing, you will learn from them and share same interests and adventures that you will remember for the rest of your life.
A must do experience when visiting Indonesia is crossing from Bali to Lombok (with the same motorcycle that we rent in Bali for $5 a day), go up to Bangsal and take a small boat to Gili Trawangan, where you will find a very small island that you can explore by foot or bike. It has very clear water, the best environment to do turtle watching, snorkelling, and lay on the beach with a mojito.
We took a one day activity with some other friends to go around the three islands (Gili Meno, Air and Trawangan) to snorkel and I highly recommend this day trip because the three of them are very close and you will get to see the beautiful sea fauna of that area.
Last but not least, I would really like to make special mention to Tegenungan Waterfalls, they are very close to Ubud and you have to walk down a lot of stairs to get there, but I promise that it is totally worthy and you will never regret. You can take a bath under the waterfall or just contemplate from the top.
Bali, the place to be, the island where all your dreams will come true and you will renew your mind, body and energy. The place where you will learn from the locals and they will be more than happy to help you in any way you may need.
If you are thinking of a place where you can get relax, learn, enjoy, meet new people, and have an adventure, then Bali is the perfect destination for you. It took my breath away many times and it will make you fall in love immediately. I really can’t wait to get back. See you very soon, Bali.
