When you hear Bavaria, you probably think of Oktoberfest, beer, Munich and mountains first – but Bavaria has a lot more to offer. In this blog I want to show you the beauty of Bavaria´s lakes. There are more than 200 lakes in Bavaria. Let me show you my 3 personal favorites.
Eibsee is located around 100 km southwest of Munich. The lake lies at the foot of Germany´s highest mountain (Zugspitze). You can walk around the lake on a simple trail which leads you through forest along crystal clear turquoise water.
Along the trail you will also pass several bays where you can stop and dip into the refreshing water. It´s also possible to rent a boat or a Stand-Up Paddle board to enjoy the view from the water. Moreover, the lake is a good starting point to take a cable car to Zugspitze.
Tip: If you want to beat the tourist crowds make sure to come in the early morning.
Next stop: Kochelsee. Kochelsee is another beautiful mountain lake but not as famous as Eibsee. As a consequence, there are not that many tourists compared to Eibsee. The lake is located around 70km south of Munich on the edge of the Bavarian Alps.
You can find a lot of hiking trails around the lake. One of them will lead you to an amazing viewpoint above Kochelsee and Walchensee, the neighboring lake The easiest trail starts close to Walchensee and leads up to Herzogenstand for the best view. Moreover, you can have a pleasant boat trip on the lake.
Tip: Make sure that you also visit Walchensee which is as beautiful as Kochelsee and the drive through the winding mountain road is a lot of fun.
Last stop: Königssee. The Königssee is situated in the Bertechsgarden alps around 150 km southeast of Munich. The lake is known for its picturesque setting inbetween the mountains. There are many hiking trails around Königssee. Spectaclular views are guaranteed. One of the best views you have from Rabenwand.
You can also explore the lake on a (electric) boat ride. The tour will take you to beautiful St. Bartholomä church which can only be reached by boat. During the boat trip you can enjoy amazing views of this crystal clear alpine lake. Make sure to arrive early to avoid cueing at the boat dock.
Tip: In case you want to visit the natural pools at Königsee, as seen on the picture, please make sure to wear proper hiking shoes. I would only recommend the trail to experienced hikers as it´s an old, not maintained hiking trail.
I hope you liked these insights into three of Bavaria´s lakes. As already mentioned there are way more beautiful lakes in Bavaria. So I can only recommend visiting as many as possible to pick your own favorites.
