This is the fifth piece of our #travelbloggeroftheweek. Every monday we interview travellers from around the world who inspire us through their travels and their personal stories. This week we got to know Sigrid from Mytravelsecret.
Thank you for taking the time out to answer our questions. Could you describe the moment you have been bitten by the travel bug?
Since I was a kid I was really fascinated by wildlife, especially primates. After traveling Borneo the first time in 2003 and seeing orangutans in the wild, I fell in love with Asia and wanted to explore more.
How many countries have you been to?
I seriously have no idea! I’m not someone who wants to travel every country in the world. I often revisit countries I love, but will always explore new areas. There’s still so much to discover.
How do you decide where to go next?
It depends on which time of the year we’re traveling, how much time we have and how much a flight ticket cost. Our bucketlist is endless, so there’s always a destination that fit.
Why did you start with your blog and what do you want to accomplish?
Kinda cliché, but I started My Travel Secret to share my stories and tips and to inspire other travelers to start traveling too. I really love to help other travelers with planning their trip, especially when they travel Asia.
What is your advice for someone wanting to start a similar blog to yours?
If you really want to do it and if traveling is your passion, just do it! If you want to start a travel blog to make a lot of money as fast as possible, please think twice. A travel blog takes a lot effort and time. Now after 2 years I start making little money from my blog, but definitely not enough to fund my travels.
How do you make money travelling?
Not! I have nice job (I’m a vetnurse) and work hard to travel as much as possible. During our travels we sometimes collab with hotels or tour companies, but only when the company really fits My Travel Secret. It’s a great way to save money while traveling.
What are the top 3 locations you want to visit?
Costa Rica is on my bucketlist for ages and I’m thrilled to finally visit this country in January, when we’ll traveling through central America for 3 months. Other places I really want to visit are the Mentawai islands in Sumatra and Bhutan and Tibet.
What has been your favorite and least favorite thing about living on the road?
I love the feeling of freedom when living on the road and the possibility to explore new places and meeting other cultures. My least favorite thing is packing my backpack again and again after a few months and when all your stuff starts smelling bad. It’s a sign you have to go home.
What is the worst place you’ve travelled?
I really didn’t liked Marrakech. It was way too chaotic and the people were very rude to us. I think I will never go back there.
What is one of the funniest things that happened on your travels?
While traveling through Nepal we crashed by accident on an engagement party. It was really funny, but a little awkward when we realized we were sort of a special guest. At the end of the party every guest (include us) got an envelope with a little money, which is a tradition. I wouldn’t recommend it as a way to make money while traveling.?
Do you have a favorite place in this world?
It’s hard to choose just one place, because I can’t choose between Sumatra and Nepal. Sumatra because of the amazing Gunung Leuser National Park. It’s the only place on earth were the tiger, rhino, elephant and orangutan live together. Nepal is such a special place. I think every traveler should travel this country at least once in their life.
